Addressing Body Image Concerns

For the study, researchers conducted focus group interviews with personal trainers who work in an upscale health club in Central Virginia. Interviews lasted 45 to 100 minutes and were transcribed and coded by the primary researcher using a Grounded Theory approach.

This method of qualitative research is designed to capture the nuances and complexities of personal trainers’ roles. As such, three different readers read the transcripts and reviewed the audio- and videotapes. This lessened the risk that the primary investigator’s own biases would strongly influence emergent themes. A bracketing interview was also completed to ensure that the primary researcher’s own experiences and beliefs were not influencing her analysis.

Prior to the first focus group, coaches were provided with an information pack that included the session aims, key definitions, participant consent form, and an activity to complete ahead of time (25 min). This writing task asked participants to reflect on body image concerns that occur in their current sport context among their athletes and how they have addressed these concerns in the past.

In general, the majority of coaches were aware that body image concerns are a common issue among their female athletes. Moreover, coaches identified that these concerns are often caused by the objectification and surveillance of girls in sport. For example, they could be proactive by ensuring that their training sessions are fun and exciting.
